METAXA is very proud to have been part of the Countdown to the 2011 Gabby Awards ceremony, which took place in grand style on the evening of last November 22 in New York City.
The Gabby Awards are top achievement awards for Greek Americans and will take place on June 4, 2011 at Ellis Island, the historic entry point of millions of immigrants to America.
Celebrating Greek America’s Best and Brightest Stars, the Gabby Awards represent excellence and accomplishment of Greek Americans, who have shined in every discipline and have become part of the American mainstream, while maintaining a close bond to their cultural heritage. The awards take place every two years in a different city.Eight categories are voted upon by the general public via web voting: Athletics, Politics, Business, Arts & Culture, Performing Arts, Education, Philanthropy and Promotion of Hellenism. Additionally, a Lifetime Achievement award winner is chosen by the Gabby Academy and awarded to an individual whose life has served as an example to others and whose accomplishments in society have resonated far and wide.
November 22nd party was the first of many scheduled “launch” events that will take place throughout the USA.
The event began with an introduction and welcome by Greek America Foundation founder Gregory Pappas, who spoke about the organization’s goals and projects, including the upcoming Gabby Awards. It was followed by a special multi-media lecture called "Hellenism and Hollywood: From Aristotle to Alexander (Payne)" that told the story of how Greek Americans impacted the development of Hollywood over the years. Jim Gianopulos (Fox Films Chairman and CEO) recounted stories from yesteryear and shared clips with the audience that highlighted the amazing legacy of Greek involvement in the development of the entertainment industry in America.
The presentation was finally followed by an after party at the nearby Red Bull Space in Soho with an impressive array of food by Tastings (a top Manhattan caterer), drinks by Metaxa and Tsantali wines, and unique desserts.
Many Greek-American top names from Hollywood and the arts, business, fashion and other fields have attended the event. The celebs included Oscar winner Olympia Dukakkis, fashion designer John Varvatos, True Blood’s Theo Alexander and many others who got major coverage in Greece like Anna Vissi (#1 pop singer), Kalomira (Eurovision finalist), among many others.
