Spyros Metaxa moved to Piraeus with his two brothers in 1880 to start a new life. He bought some vineyards in this region which eventually inspired him to create the now world-famous Greek spirit Metaxa.

In 1890, Spyros Metaxa started to export his alcoholic drinks to other countries where his brand won various awards. After the founder's death, his family continued to expand the Metaxa export market.
